Publication on "Measuring the Impact of Innovation Districts"
This reports on "Measuring the Impact of Innovation Districts" proposes a generic and algorithmic methodology to identify and measure the success of innovation districts. To achieve this, different sets of large-scale geospatial data have been combined with well-established machine learning methods and in-depth statistical analysis. As a result, a quantitative methodology is presented that can support the policy-making process in the identification of urban areas with a high concentration of innovation activities and with high potential for growth. This exploratory research aims at providing a set of methods and findings that heavily build on recent advances on using large-scale datasets and data science to understand social problems, and in particular, the key driving indicators of deprivation and success of various entities.

This chapter on "Connecting Urban and Regional Innovation Ecosystems to Enhance Competitiveness" explores why an increasing number of European regions and cities in close cooperation with quadruple helix partners, such as clusters, firms, universities, nongovernmental organizations, and member states, combine place-based innovation strategies with cross-border networks of innovation. Such collaborations may result in a rich variety of organizational solutions and approaches, which allow actors and stakeholders to overcome different barriers and concerns of innovation. Key analytical concepts are proximity, knowledge complexity, entrepreneurial discovery processes, and stakeholder analysis.
Publication on "Exploring the Concept of Geographies of Innovation"
The publication on "Exploring the Concept of Geographies of Innovation" addresses the main challenges of current policies for geographies of innovation in Europe, offering a view on how governments can better support the emergence and development of geographies of innovation in Europe. The authors propose a definition and classification of the different models of geographies of innovation, highlighting some of the main challenges in implementing this identification and measurement. The comparative case study analysis containing thirteen case studies from four cities provide evidence supporting the development of policies, enabling current and future geographies of innovation to enhance their performance and their contributions to greener, cleaner, socially more just cities and regions in Europe and beyond.

The chapter on "Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies: Exploring Opportunities Through Smart Specialisation" explores the growing importance of the role of transnational and interregional cooperation in facilitating innovation activities in new and emerging technological areas associated with the European Union’s smart specialisation approach, a new generation policy experiment in the field of research and innovation. The authors then explore how interregional bottom-up collaborative actions such as thematic S3 partnerships can help regions take advantage of the opportunities offered by new technological developments such as artificial intelligence.
Publication on "Exploring the potential of thematic Smart Specialisation Partnerships to contribute to SDGs"
The focus of this paper on "Exploring the potential of thematic Smart Specialisation Partnerships to contribute to SDGs" is on thematic smart specialisation (S3) partnerships included in The Partnerships for SDGs online platform, which is the United Nations' global registry of voluntary commitments and multi-stakeholder partnerships, facilitating global engagement of all stakeholders in support of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. By exploring thematic S3 partnerships as an example of such interregional collaborative arrangements, this paper explores the extent to which these activities are able to contribute to the attainment of the Global Goals. This research supports the view that in order to track regions' contribution to SDGs and assess its impact, European policymakers should continue building in ways to collect consistently information about the extent to which various policy local/regional/national initiatives contribute to specific goals.
